Testing out my new invention.

Jupiter-3 50mm f/1.5 39mm thread mount lens (Russian copy of a Zeiss Sonnar) modified to fit onto a pentax body, with a bit of extension in between. My depth of field is about 2-3mm and it focuses at around 80mm.

Either your point of focus is way off, or something else is wrong. IMHO the shot is far too blurry to be very effective as a macro shot. But props for building your own invention :)

Point of focus way off... you could say that I guess, the depth of field being as small as it is. I guess it is harder to tell on this smaller version but there are a couple of points on the bee that are in very sharp focus. They are curved surfaces however and even at about 1mm back/foward along the curve they are starting to become out of focus.

And in other news, it's not SUPPOSED to be a razor sharp macro shot. :)

Yeah, that would be hard to tell without looking at the full-res version. So what's it supposed to be then, if not a macro shot (which I would say is supposed to show you the DETAIL on something small)? Just curious :) still a cool experiment!

Where is the focus in this shot?? The 199.00 sony does macro much finer than this. zoom in looks worse

You did read the description? This is a $20 Russian lens attached to my camera using a piece of PVC with mounts glued to it.

The point of these photos is not focus, it is color and shape. I'm not asking you to like it or even understand the style but this is not a point and shoot Sony digital on macro mode. The comparison to said point and shoot is completley irrelevant.

I personally think this shot is awesome. You made your own extension tube, that's pretty damn cool. The bokeh is almost a solid color, which is also awesome. I think it's perfectly acceptable to have a soft image. It's not that the bee isn't in focus, it's pretty sharp around his head. I think everyone else missed the point. The only area I think this is lacking in is contrast, and I'm sure that's because you used a 20 dollar lens. Well done on the bokeh machine and thinking outside the box.
